MOREHEAD, Ky. – The first loss of the season came on the final day of the season for the Jacksonville State volleyball team, falling to Morehead State on Monday afternoon.
The loss snapped the nation's second-longest winning streak held by the Gamecocks (15-1 Ohio Valley Conference), and allowed MSU (15-1 OVC) to claim a share of the OVC regular-season crown. Due to the set differential between the two matches, the Eagles will play host to the conference tournament beginning on Thursday.
When it was needed most, the Eagles stepped up for a big match recording 10 blocks and limiting JSU well below its offensive average to just a .134 hitting clip. For the first time all season, no Gamecock finished with double digit kills.
Freshman Courtney Glotzabch finished the day with nine kills and a .207 hitting mark for one of the better percentages of the day. She was followed by junior
Lena Kindermann with seven, while
Kaylie Milton and
Sadie Brown each had six.
Much like Sunday's match, JSU fell behind early, but time around the Gamecocks wouldn't rally back in five. Down 9-2 in the first, JSU let the opening set get away early on its way to a 25-16 defeat. The second and third frames were both closer, but an error late in the second opened the door for a 25-23 MSU win, and Jax State was unable to fight back from a 19-15 hole for the second time in two days at the end of the third.
Despite the setback, Sunday officially brings a close to the 2021 spring regular season and the Gamecocks head into the tournament as co-champs along with the host Eagles. It marks back-to-back title seasons for the Gamecocks for the first time since 2006 and 2007. In its 18-year run in the OVC, Jax State has claimed eight league championships (Regular: 2006, 2007, 2009, 2019, 2021 / Tournament: 2005, 2006, 2009) and will try to grab one more later this week for its final act before moving to the ASUN.
JSU will meet Southeast Missouri (14-2 OVC) on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET in Morehead's Johnson Arena for the semifinal matchup of the OVC tournament. The Redhawks have won 14-straight matches to end the season after starting the year 0-2 with back-to-back losses to JSU to begin the season. All tournament matches will stream on ESPN+.
