Gamecocks Open OVC Play With Win At Belmont

NASHVILLE – The Jacksonville state softball team got its Ohio Valley Conference schedule off on a positive note, handing Belmont a 4-2 defeat on Saturday in the first game of a three-game series at Rose Park.

Senior Reagan Watkins no-hit the Bruins (3-6, 0-1 OVC) for six innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters to guide the Gamecocks (2-7, 1-0 OVC) to their second-straight win and their 30th over the Bruins in 38 all-time meetings in the series.

The senior from Daphne, Ala., held the Bruin offense without a hit through six innings, while Belmont starter Alicia Veltri kept the Gamecocks off of the board through six innings, as well. The Gamecocks broke the scoreless tie with a four-run seventh that would be just enough to hand Watkins her first win of the season.

JSU scattered four hits over its first six innings but couldn't push anything across until the seventh. A pinch-hit single from Shleby Newsome got things started, and back-to-back bunt singles from Lauren Hunt and Savannah Sudduth loaded the bases with no outs for the heart of the Gamecock order.

Keeli Bobbitt broke the tie with her infield single to second base that scored Newsome for the game's first run. A Megan Fortner sac fly plated Hunt, and then a two-run single from Jada Terry staked Watkins to a 4-0 lead.

The Bruins didn't go away quietly. Veltri broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff double that was followed by one-out singles from Kaylie Brown and Lauren Veltri, making it a 4-1 JSU lead. Audrey Lyle's RBI single made it a 4-2 game and put the tying run in scoring position.

Watkins (1-2) struck out MyKayla Spurlin to end the threat and finish off the win for JSU. She earned her first win of the season after limiting the Bruins to two runs on four hits and five walks in seven innings of work.

Alicia Veltri (2-3) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits in her seven frames in the circle. She walked three and struck out four.

Bobbitt, Terry and Hunt each recorded two hits in the win, with Terry's two RBI leading the way.

The Gamecocks and Bruins will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader that will begin at 12 p.m. CT.
