Jax State moves to 10-0 with road sweep at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team hit .392 overall, recorded 51 kills and 51 digs to go with seven team blocks as it rolled past Belmont in straight sets on Monday.
 
Entering Monday, only nine Division I NCAA volleyball programs were 10-0 or better on the season, and after Monday's sweep, the Gamecocks (10-0 Ohio Valley Conference) can add their name to the list. JSU overpowered host Belmont 25-15, 25-13, 25-18 to drop the Bruins to 1-9.
 
Senior Lexie Libs, statistically among the best setters in the nation, directed Jax State to another explosive offensive showing with 43 assists. Freshman Courtney Glotzbach hit .619 with 15 kills, second only to junior Lena Kindermann with a team-best 16. Between the two pins, middle blocker Katie Montgomery hit .375 with eight kills while leading the way with five blocks.
 
Across the net, Erin Carmichael upped 18 attacks, while Libs and Kaylie Milton each collected seven digs. Libs joined Montgomery several times to get a piece of four blocks, while freshman Sadie Brown has two blocks with her four kills.
 
JSU pulled away from a three-point game in the first with a 5-1 run to lead 15-8 at the first break of the afternoon. The Gamecocks didn't slow down in the second half to claim a 25-15 win on Milton's ace. In the second, JSU led 6-5 when Glotzbach and Brown went back-and-forth with a string of kills to build the lead to five. The New Albany, Indiana, native had eight of her kills in the second as JSU soon led 22-12 on its way to a 2-0 match lead.
 
The Gamecocks roared out to an 8-1 advantage to start the third, which became 20-8 as JSU began to test its depth in the final stage. Freshman Caroline Kasson came in late to hit .400. successfully putting away three of her five attempts. The offense was turned over to freshman setter Macie Garrison down the stretch, while Anna Nelson, Dani Steele and Addie Halverson also entered in the third. Nelson finished with a trio of late digs as JSU took the last set 25-18.
 
In its final season in the OVC, JSU remains in a tie with Morehead State for the top spot in the league with six regular season matches remaining. The Gamecocks will host Eastern Kentucky next weekend on Sunday and Monday from Pete Mathews Coliseum.
