CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Southeast Missouri on Saturday at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
Â
The Gamecocks (8-9, 3-3 OVC) are now an even .500 in league play while the Redhawks (12-4, 5-0 OVC) remain undefeated against Ohio Valley Conference competition.
Â
Three singles matches went the distance and two sets went to a tiebreaker in the hard-fought road loss.
Harriet Hamilton,
Malin Buechner and
Balsen Kaya each played to three sets but came up short in the final round.
Â
Hamilton battled back from a 6-4 loss in the first set to win 6-3 in the second against Daniela Hlacikova at No. 3, but the JSU senior fell 6-4 in the third. The loss was Hamilton's first singles defeat in conference play and just her second loss of the season.
Â
Buechner saw her match at No. 3 start out on a right foot, winning 7-5 in the first set, but SEMO's Kseniya Zonova rallied back to take the next two stanzas 6-4 and 6-2.
Â
Balsen fell behind early with a 6-4 loss in the opening set against Lera Valeeva at No. 6, but battled back to win 7-6 in the second with a 7-5 tiebreaker. Despite carrying momentum into the final game, Balsen was defeated 6-3 in the deciding set.
Â
With the road portion of their schedule complete, the Gamecocks return to the JSU Tennis Courts for their final two matches of the regular season. Jax State hosts Tennessee State on Saturday, April 17, and wrap up the season Sunday, April 18, against Belmont.
