Gamecocks Drop Series Opener at Southeast Missouri

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri scored five unanswered run to take the opening game of the weekend series, 6-5, over Jacksonville State on Friday night at Capaha Field.

The Redhawks erased a 5-1 deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth and took the lead with a three-run sixth inning. The Gamecocks will look to even the series in the opening game of a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. The series finale is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Both games will be available on ESPN+.

Back-to-back doubles to start the fifth inning for SEMO highlighted the beginning of the comeback for the Redhawks after Jax State expanded its lead to four runs after a three spot in the visitors half of the inning. JSU starter Christian Edwards was able to limit the damage to just the two runs after a Gamecock error opened the door for the second run of the inning.

A leadoff walk, an infield single and the second JSU miscue opened the door for a big SEMO inning. SEMO had an RBI single with one out and a two-run single with two outs for the three runs in the inning and the lead.

SEMO's Kyle Miller limited JSU to just one hit over the final three plate appearances. The Gamecocks touched Redhawk starter Dylan Dodd for eight hits and all five runs. JSU out-hit SEMO, 11-9, on the night.

Junior Cole Frederick opened the game with a home run and a sacrifice fly RBI by senior Tre Kirklin gave the Gamecocks a two-run lead after two plate appearances. Frederick turned in a three-hit night while redshirt junior Zeth Malcom and senior Alex Webb had multiple hits in the setback. Malcom had the first RBI of the inning, followed by a Webb RBI double. Redshirt junior Nash Adams rounded out the scoring with an RBI single.
