BATON ROUGE, La. – Jacksonville State's attempt to compete in the 2021 NCAA Women's Golf Regional wasn't allowed to take place.
Â
For the third-straight day, tournament and course officials canceled play at the Baton Rouge Regional, citing course conditions on The University Club as the reason. Overnight and morning rains prompted an announcement before noon on Monday and the same thing happened on Tuesday.
Â
Wednesday saw the 18 teams at the course, warming up to start play three times before being informed the start time was pushed back from 10 am to 11 am and then to noon. Officials announced at approximately 11:30 a.m. that "though the course was playable, it wasn't playable at a championship level."
Â
The decision ended the season for 12 of the teams and advanced the top six seeds - LSU, Ole Miss, Baylor, Oregon, Maryland and Alabama - to the NCAA Championships at the Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Ariz., from May 21-24.
Â
The Gamecocks end their season as the Ohio Valley Conference Champions for the first time since 2012 after JSU shot an 861 – the best 54-hole score in OVC Tournament history – to beat Eastern Kentucky by 24 shots – the fourth-largest margin of victory in OVC history.
Â
Freshman Berta Sanchez (-7) and junior Ana Perez Altuna (-4) finished first and second, respectively, in the conference tournament after being the only two players in the 40-player field to shoot under par. Sophomore Claire Vermette finished fifth, while Valentina Curet and Layne Dyar were ninth and 10th, respectively to put JSU's entire lineup in the Top 10.
