JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State University Volleyball team continued preseason practice today, just nine days away from an opening exhibition match against UAB on August 21 at 1 p.m. in Pete Mathews Coliseum.Â
Â
The squad has had four two-a-day practices since reporting on campus last Friday.Â
Â
Head Coach Todd Garvey is pleased with the progress being made so far.Â
Â
"We are looking really good so far. Everybody is coming in really super focused," said Garvey. "One of the things we have is talked about is that we have to get better every practice, so they have been bringing it."
Â
Yesterday the ASUN announced the Preseason Coaches' Poll and the Gamecocks were picked fifth, earning 94 total points.Â
Â
"It's our first year in the conference so it's kind of hard to see where we fit in," said Garvey. "I kind of like being picked middle of the pack just because it is motivating. I think anytime you can go into conference play with a little chip on your shoulder, out to kind of prove we can finish better than that, it gives us an edge in practice to keep working hard and to prove that we can finish higher than what we were ranked. We will work really hard every day to go after that."
Â
In addition to the poll, the ASUN announced the Preseason All-Conference Team. Senior outside hitter, Lena Kindermann was recognized on the squad.Â
Â
"It's an awesome achievement for Lena," said Garvey. "It's awesome for her to get that recognition, but she would be the first to tell you that she's more about the team than individual awards. So, we are trying to work hard every day to get those team awards at the end of the year."
Â
JSU will continue with two-a-day practices until classes begin on August 18.Â
Â
The Gamecocks will kick-off the regular season against Gardner-Webb at 11 a.m. on August 27 in the Gamecock Classic tournament.Â
Â
Admission to all JSU home volleyball matches is free.Â
