Volleyball Faces UAB in Preseason Exhibition Tomorrow

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State University Volleyball team will take on UAB in a preseason exhibition, Saturday August 21, at 1 p.m. in Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The Gamecocks wrapped up preseason camp on Tuesday with the first day of classes beginning on Wednesday. The preseason will be capped Saturday with an exhibition match against the Blazers, less than one week from beginning the regular season in the Gamecock Classic tournament next weekend.

Preseason camp returned to a normal two-week stretch this year, compared to the extended period last season.

"I think overall it went great. There are still parts of the game we can get better at.", said Head Coach Todd Garvey. "Last year since we had a spring season we had three or four months to get ready so it does seem a little bit overwhelming only having the two weeks like normal to get ready for the start of the season, but I think we have made a lot of progress over these two weeks. If we can get healthy and stay healthy during the season, this team is going to be a lot of fun to watch."

The Blazers finished 8-8 last season and 7-5 in the Conference USA, while the Gamecocks won back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference titles with a 16-2 overall record and 15-1 league record.

The two sides last met at the Samford Invite in 2019, with UAB taking their 11^th win of the series, 3-1. The Gamecocks are 4-11 all-time against the in-state foe.

Saturday's exhibition will be the only tune up game for the Gamecocks this season.

On August 27-28, Jax State will host the Gamecock Classic, beginning with an 11 a.m. matchup against Gardner-Webb on the 27th.

"For me [the exhibition] is about who plays well together. It's not necessarily about if we win or lose, it's about trying to get better" added Garvey. "Our offense was really good last year so we are trying to see if we can pick up where we left off last year. We've been working on defense really hard and getting used to each other and who you're next to on the court which changes our defense. That's one thing I'm looking forward to this weekend is how we defend UAB. They have a really good team and it should be a challenge for us."
