Gamecocks Extinguish Hornets Early in 5-0 WIn

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Jacksonville State soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win over Alabama State after recording four goals in the opening half on Friday evening at the ASU Soccer Field.

The Gamecocks moved to 2-1 on the season and will carry a two-match winning streak into Sunday's home matinee against the other in-state SWAC foe, Alabama A&M. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field. Admission is free to all JSU home matches. The match will also be streamed on ESPN+.

It didn't take long for the Gamecocks to start the scoring onslaught with the first scoring play coming just under two minutes into the contest. Sophomore Cynthia Bagozzi finished a break-away opportunity for her first goal of the season. She finished with a pair of shots in the match. The Gamecocks were gifted a goal by the Hornets after a perfect corner kick off the foot of junior Reilly Kucko in the eighth minute.

JSU's added the final two goals within a seven-minute span from the 17th minute to the 24th. Sophomore centered up a shot on goal to make it 3-0 through the first 17 minutes, followed by the final goal of the first half from junior Cephana Deane. Sophomore Briana Eads picked up the assist on Deane's netted ball.

For the second consecutive match, freshman Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles came off the bench for the Gamecocks' goal in the second half. After recording her first career goal last Sunday against Jackson State, Beckles dazzled through the ASU back line for the goal.

The Hornets had a plus-two advantage in total shots over the Gamecocks, but it was another clean sheet for JSU junior goalkeeper Morgan Lerch, who collected her second shutout of the season and 10th in her career. She now matches former Gamecock Katelyn Geddings' career mark of 10 career shutouts. Both rank fourth in the JSU record book.

Junior Julia Papa led JSU with three shots while Prescod-Beckles adding a pair of opportunities.

"I think the difference between the two teams is that we took our chances and I think the score line flattered us some and defensively I thought we played undisciplined at times and lost our shape and I think that came from scoring early goals," said head coach Neil Macdonald. I thought the second half performance was really good even though most of the goals came in the first half."

Macdonald was able to empty his bench and allow everyone on the club to get valuable minutes in the lopsided affair.

"I think we got everyone off of there and gave them some time off the field and we were able to get out younger kids some great minutes. I even tried some people at some different positions on the field.

With two wins in a row, the Gamecocks will be looking to make it three straight wins after the season-opening setback to Alabama. JSU will host the Bulldogs of AAMU, who have been idle since last Sunday.

"We are still relatively young and we have to learn hoe to mange these games and the moments in the game," added Macdonald. "We have to bounce into Sunday with some confidence."
