Gamecocks Face Chattanooga in Midweek Match Tuesday

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State University volleyball team will host the Chattanooga Mocs at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August, 31 in a midweek matchup in THE PETE.

The Gamecocks enter the contest fresh off three sweeps in the Gamecock Classic this past weekend in Jacksonville.

The back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference champions picked up where they left off in the spring, defeating Gardner-Webb, 3-0, Alabama State, 3-0, and Middle Tennessee, 3-0, to begin their fall 2021 campaign in the ASUN. Against the Mocs, JSU will look to start the season 4-0 for just the fourth time in program history. Last season, the squad opened a conference-only season with a historic 15-0 start.

Chattanooga enters the match 1-2 on the season after suffering a pair of 3-0 losses to Memphis and California Baptist over the weekend in the Georgia State Invitational. The Mocs' first win of the season came against Georgia State, 3-1.

Tuesday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Mike Parris on the call. Admission is free.

Both coaches bring experience and championship pedigree into Tuesday night's non-conference test. Gamecock Head Coach Todd Garvey is in his fourth year with JSU and fourth year overall and has led the team to a 57-26 record since beginning in 2018. Under Garvey, the Gamecocks have won two OVC Championships: 2019 and spring 2021. In his second season in 2018 Garvey was named the OVC Coach of the Year. For Chattanooga, Head Coach Travis Filar has posted a 118-184 record in 11 seasons with the Mocs. In 2015 Filar was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year and led the squad to a Southern Conference regular season championship. Since 2015 the Mocs have had just one season above .500.

In the all-time series between the two sides, Chattanooga leads with a 7-4 record. The two programs haven't met since the 2005 season. On September 13, 2005, JSU defeated the Mocs 3-0 in Jacksonville.

Senior Lena Kindermann leads JSU offensively with 29 kills so far on the season. She averaged 4.14 kills per set this weekend, including a season-high 15 against Middle Tennessee. The outside hitter has totaled 972 kills throughout her career and is just 28 away from becoming the 21st Gamecock in program history to reach 1,000 kills. The Landhagan, Germany native is hitting an astounding .531 on the season to lead the ASUN.

On the defensive side the Gamecocks are led by reigning ASUN Freshman of the Week Brooklyn Schiffli in the back row and junior Zoe Gonzales at the net. Schiffli started all three weekend matches for JSU at libero in her debut. She leads the Gamecocks with 35 digs and 3.89 digs per set on the season. Gonzales leads Jax State with seven total blocks on the season, including one solo. She is averaging 1.0 block per set and recorded a career-high six total blocks against Middle Tennessee. Schiffli had a career-high 13 digs against both Alabama State and Middle Tennessee.

In addition to her defensive success, Gonzales is second on the team in kills with 16 and is hitting at an impressive .609 clip for 2.29 kills per set.

Junior Anna Nelson leads the Gamecocks in serving so far this season with five service aces. She totaled a career-high three aces against Middle Tennessee to help JSU to a third consecutive sweep. Jax State ranks first in the ASUN in service aces per set with 2.11. Nelson is the conference leader in that regard with a .71 mark per set.

Around the NCAA, the Gamecocks have posted the fourth-best hitting percentage in Division I, hitting a .393 clip so far this season. Against Middle Tennessee JSU hit .444, the third-highest mark in program history, and had 46 kills.

Gylian Finch leads the Mocs with 36 kills on the season, averaging 3.60 per set. Setter Sophia Bossong leads Chattanooga with 93 assists so far. Paige Gallentine is the defensive leader for the visitors with 44 digs through the first three games, averaging 4.40 per set.
