JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team could not capitalize on 35 shots in a 1-0 setback to Gardner-Webb on Friday evening at the JSU Soccer Field.
The loss drops the Gamecocks to 3-2 on the season and snaps their three-match winning streak. The Runnin' Bulldogs notched their first win of the season after starting the season with four losses. Jax State will look to bounce back from Friday's result on Sunday, hosting Georgia Southern out of the Sun Belt Conference. Opening kick is set for 1 p.m. on the JSU campus. Admission is free for all JSU home soccer matches. The match will also be streamed on ESPN+.
Trailing 1-0 after GWU recorded the lone goal of the contest in the 42nd minute, the Gamecocks possessed the ball for 53 percent of the second half with 23 of the 35 looks at an equalizing goal coming in the final 45 minutes. Jax State had 13 on-goal looks in the contest and limited GWU to four in the entire match.
"It is hard to be disappointed in the performance because we obviously dominated the game from start to finish and the result is not very good. I think when you create 35 chances in a game, you should be winning the game," said head coach
Neil Macdonald. "We got caught sleeping on one play."
GWU's Maddie Turlington connected on one of the three first half shots with a netted ball from the left side of the box after a throw in by Jaasiel Forde. Turlington would be sent off for the rest of the contest after a red card was issued for fighting. Turlington had two shots on goal in the 44 minutes of action on the pitch.

The Eagles of GSU will be rested after playing last Tuesday night and picking up their third win in a row after edging The Citadel, 1-0.
"We just have to reboot and have a good active recovery session on Saturday to get everyone in a positive frame of mind. We will focus on the good things we did tonight and the thing with college soccer, you have regroup quickly whether you win or lose with a quick turnaround," added Macdonald.
