TUSCALOOSA – Jacksonville State was unable to hang with the Southeastern Conference's Crimson Tide on Friday night, falling 104-62 inside Coleman Coliseum on the campus of the University of Alabama.
The No. 16 Crimson Tide (4-0) flexed its muscle from beyond the three-point arc, connecting on 21 outside shots to pull away from the Gamecocks (1-2) in the second half.
Juwan Perdue finished a point shy of his career high, matching
Amanze Ngumezi with a team-high 13. Senior
Demaree King added 12, but JSU's 35-percent shooting and nine triples wasn't enough to keep pace with a hot Alabama squad.
UA finished the night shooting 52-percent and made eight more shots from behind the three-point line than it made inside of it.
The two sides exchanged blows early going back-and-forth with ties at 8, 11, 14 and 17 off three-pointers. A couple of free throws from Clarence "Monzy" Jackson gave JSU's its largest lead of the night at 24-19 midway through the opening period. With just over two minutes to play until halftime JSU trailed 43-39 when an 8-0 run for UA to end the half built the momentum for the home squad to use the rest of the way.
A 13-0 stretch for Alabama early in the second half was the final blow JSU could not counter as the Crimson Tide slowly increased the margin until the final horn. The 104 points allowed by JSU were the most in the
Ray Harper era. The last time the Gamecocks gave up as many also came against an SEC foe all the way back on Nov. 9, 2007, when Georgia notched 107.
