ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Senior
Demaree King's season-high 25 points wasn't enough as Jacksonville State dropped a tough 86-82 decision to Northern Colorado in overtime late Saturday night inside The Pit at New Mexico.
In addition to King's big night, JSU (2-4) got the first double-double of the year by a Gamecock from
Juwan Perdue with 12 points and rebounds, and a received a career-high 19 points from
Peyton Daniels. Still, the Bears (2-4) answered each call with four double-digit scorers of their own in a game that featured 16 lead changes.
UNC led for most of the first half, and 28 minutes total, building a 43-35 halftime advantage. Jax State looked to turn the page following the intermission with nine-straight points to open the second half, capped by a go-ahead dunk from
Maros Zeliznak, who also tallied a season-high 10 points.
From there, neither team led by more than three the rest of regulation. Down by a pair twice in the final minute, Perdue knocked down a couple of free throws to tie at 67, and then Daniels hit a running layup with 22 seconds remaining to even the score again at 69. A defensive stop on the next possession forced the first overtime of the season.
In the extra period, the whistles continued to blow as they had most of the night. JSU shot 19 free throws, while UNC finished 19-of-21 from the stripe in a game where a trio pf players fouled out. In the end, a late three pushed UNC's lead to 81-76 with just over a minute left and the Gamecocks were unable to have the time to recover.
JSU takes on North Dakota State for the first time tomorrow afternoon to conclude the Lobo Classic.
