Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

JSU Earns Wins at No. 1 and No. 2 Singles in Loss to UAB

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season, 5-2, to UAB on Saturday afternoon but picked up a pair wins in the top two singles flights.

The Gamecocks fall to 2-5 on the season and are 1-1 on the JSU Tennis Courts. UAB improved to 5-3 on the year with the win.

The match opened with a 6-2 win in doubles for UAB in the third flight. The Blazers clinched the doubles point with another 6-2 win on the No. 2 court. Freshman Romane Mosse and Kennedi Jones were tied 4-4 with the pair from UAB in the first flight when the point was clinched.

In singles play JSU fell behind 4-2 to start when Ella Tuomela was forced to retire with an injury after falling behind 4-2 to Maggie White in the fifth flight. After UAB earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, Mosse gave the Gamecocks their first point of the match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory on the No. 1 court. Enya Ratkic clinched the win for UAB with an ensuing 6-3, 6-1 win in the sixth flight. Sydney Clarke added a point for the Blazers from the No. 6 spot and Syrova closed out the match with a 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 win in the second flight for her team-leading fifth win of the season. Syrova, a sophomore, is 5-1 during her first year with the Gamecocks.

"To win at line one and two against UAB says a lot about where our team is headed and what we are capable of," said Head Coach Mike Mucci. "Still, we know we had opportunities in both singles and doubles to do better and really push them. It's a tough pill to swallow because we were so close in some ways, but we also know we were without two normal starters due to wrist problems, and Ella had to retire early in the match with an injury today. This is something we will learn and grow from as we prepare for ASUN play."

The Gamecocks will return to the JSU Tennis Courts on Friday, Feb. 25, against Alabama A&M at 11 a.m. Stay up to date with JSU tennis at JSUGamecocksports.com and on social media at JSUGamecocksTN.
