Gamecocks win ASUN battle of Jacksonvilles, 64-58

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State bounced back with a 64-58 win over Jacksonville University on Saturday night to regain momentum before hitting the road.

JSU (16-7, 9-1 ASUN) snapped a seven-game skid to their former conference foe, knocking off the Dolphins (14-8, 6-4 ASUN) for the first time since 2000 during JSU's previous stint in the league. The win maintains Jax State's position atop the ASUN standings with six games to play.

Senior Darian Adams, makng his 100th collegiate start, led the way offensively with 22 points and was joined in double figures by Jalen Finch and Kayne Henry with 10 apiece. Henry pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to notch his first double-double of the season and sixth of his career. Finch dished six assists to help open up the floor for Adams, Henry and Jalen Gibbs who finished with eight points.

Coming off the setback to North Florida on Thursday, JSU started faster against the Dolphins with a 12-5 lead early behind a pair of triples from Adams. However, a five minute scoring drought midway through the half opened the door for a 12-0 JU run and put the visitors back on top. The Gamecocks slowly worked their way back and after tying things up at 26, Gibbs swiped the ball at halfcourt and found Henry streak up the side for the lob and slam dunk that sent Pete Mathews Coliseum into a frenzy.

JSU led 33-30 at the break, and after a few second-half possessions led by as many as nine following another trey from Adams. JU slowly worked to trim the deficit for the next 10 minutes of game action, eventually pulling within one at 48-47 with under eight minutes to play. After a couple of defensive stops on both ends, JU regained the lead for the first time since midway through the opening half with a second-chance bucket.

Just as he did all night, Adams buried a trey on the other end to put JSU back in front and begin an 11-0 run that all but sealed the win. The Dolphins struck for three triples in the final 50 seconds, but JSU finished 16-of-19 from the stripe to secure the victory.

The Gamecocks will travel to DeLand, Florida, on Wednesday to visit Stetson in the final cross-division matchup of the regular season. Following the visit to the Sunshine State, JSU will play three of its final five at home.
