Ten-Run Inning Lifts Gamecocks in Rout of Dartmouth

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team used a 10-run third inning to roll to a mercy-rule win over Dartmouth on Monday afternoon at University Field.

The Gamecocks (17-11) broke a scoreless tie with the big inning and cruised to and 11-1 win or the Big Green (3-14) in five innings.

Junior Megan Fortner led an offensive onslaught with two doubles and four RBI in the third, while senior Holly Stewart belted her first career home run and junior Lauren Hunt had a 2-for-2 day at the plate to lead the way.

While the Gamecocks were scoring runs, freshman Sarah Currie was busy keeping the Big Green offense in check. She took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and only allowed a run on two hits in four innings of work. She struck out four and earned the win to improve to 6-2 on the season.

Senior Lexi Androlevich tossed a scoreless fifth inning, striking out two and allowing just one hit to finish the game in the circle for JSU.

In the third, JSU sent 15 batters to the plate and scored the 10 runs on seven hits, a Dartmouth error, three walks and one hit batter.

Fortner started the scoring with her first double of the third inning, a line drive down the left field line that drove in Sidney Wagnon and Caroline Lively and broke the scoreless tie by putting a 2-0 JSU lead on the board.

Karsen Mosley singled in a run and Brantly Bonds singled in two more to make it 5-0, and then a sac fly from Addie Robinson and an RBI single from Hunt made it an 8-0 JSU advantage. Fortner capped the inning the same way she started it, with a two-run double to left that scored Hunt and Lively to put the Gamecocks up 10-0.

After the Big Green got a run in the top of the fourth on a Billie McFayden single, Stewart got it right back with a line drive over the wall in left center that put the final 11-1 score on the board.

The Gamecocks will travel to Birmingham, where they will play a doubleheader at Samford on Wednesday. The first game will start at 3 p.m. CT
