Gamecocks Finish Third at Pinetree CC Women's Collegiate

KENNESAW, Ga. – Ana Perez Altuna and Berta Sanchez each finished in the top 10 to lead the Jacksonville State women's golf team at the Pinetree Country Club Women's Collegiate on Monday and Tuesday.
The Gamecocks were the only team in the 12-team field to break 300 in Tuesday's final round, shooting a 7-over 295 on the par-72, 6,201-yard Pinetree Country Club. They final round allowed JSU to climb three spots on the leaderboard and finish third with a 54-hole score of 906.
Host Kennesaw State won the event, while Xavier finished second, just five shots ahead of the Gamecocks.
On the individual side, Altuna led JSU on Tuesday. The Buenos Aires, Argentina, native used five birdies to card a final-round 71 and finished the two-day event with a 7-over 223. She climbed 10 spots during the final 18 holes after shooting rounds of 74 and 78 to open the event on Monday.
She tied with teammate Sanchez, who shot a final-round 72 on Tuesday to cap her 54-hole score of 223. The Barcelona, Spain, native moved up five spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday, making two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars to wrap up her tournament. She opened play with a 76 and then a 75 on Monday.
KSU's Bella Kil won medalist honors in the 68-player event, thanks to a 2-under 214.
Junior Claire Vermette also finished strong for JSU, answering her rounds of 77 and 75 on Monday with a final-round 73 on Tuesday. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native turned in a 54-hole score of 225 to tie for 12th but was just four shots out of the Top five.
Freshman Paula Perez Cubinas tied for 37th after rounds of 77-79-80 gave her a 54-hole score of 236, while senior Valentina Curet's 240 (81-80-79) put her in 50th place to round out the JSU lineup.
The Gamecocks will return to action on March 28-29, when they compete in the Georgia State Women's Intercollegiate at Rivermont Golf Course in John's Creek, Ga.
