Women's Tennis Defeats Bellarmine 4-2 Sunday

JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State women's tennis team defeated Bellarmine 4-2 on Sunday afternoon, in come-from-behind fashion, to move to 2-2 in conference play.

With the win JSU is 6-9 overall and moves into sixth place in the conference standings while Bellarmine (0-4, 1-17) remains in 12th.

Bellarmine took an early 1-0 advantage in the match after winning two-of-three doubles matches, for the doubles point.

In singles, Bellarmine pushed its lead to 2-0 following a win in the first flight. Down 2-0, JSU responded with four consecutive singles wins to clinch the match victory. A 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, win for Dariana Prato in the third flight ignited a rally for the Gamecocks. Anna Syrova's team-leading 10th win of the season, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, in the second flight, evened the match 2-2.  Freshman Ella Tuomela gave JSU its first lead of the day, 3-2, with her 6-1, 6-1 win on the No. 4 singles court. In the sixth flight, senior Balsen Kaya clinched the match win in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

"This was a battle. Bellarmine was much improved and credit to them for playing aggressive and confident doubles with more energy than us," said head Coach Mike Mucci. "We were down 2–0 with our backs against the wall and Anna and Dariana responded to get the momentum back on our side. At the end of the day a conference win is always a good thing. We will get back home and prepare for two tough matches next weekend."

Up next, JSU will host North Florida on Friday, April 1, and Stetson on Sunday, April 3, in the final two home matches of the season.
