Carter, Gamecocks Shut Out Colonels Again To Complete Sweep

JACKSONVILLE – Kat Carter tossed her second shutout in as many days and Jacksonville State's third shutout of the weekend on Sunday, leading the Gamecocks to a 1-0 win and a series sweep of Eastern Kentucky at University Field.

Carter, a true freshman from Spring Hill, Tenn., allowed just two hits in Sunday's gem after throwing a three-hitter against the Colonels (7-18, 3-9 ASUN) on Saturday. She and fellow freshman Sarah Currie, who one-hit EKU on Saturday, combined to help the Gamecocks (23-15, 7-5 ASUN) shut out an opponent in all three games of a series for the first time since 2016, when JSU recorded three shut outs against Morehead State on April 16-17.

The duo was stellar over the weekend, limiting EKU's bats to a 6-for-67 (.090) showing, while the Gamecocks hit .321 and outscored their opponent, 14-0.

On Sunday, Carter allowed back-to-back doubles in the EKU second inning to Isabella Gonzalez and Jeanay Riley, but Gonzalez couldn't score after having to stay close to second to see if Riley's fly ball would be caught. The Colonels would load the bases after a walk in the second, but Carter struck out Morales and then got Miranda Lopez to line into a double play to end the threat.

Sunday's game was different from the two on Saturday, when the Gamecocks took control early in both games. They scored a combined 10 runs in the first inning on Saturday but needed all seven to dent the scoreboard on Sunday.

Senior Keeli Bobbitt scored the game winner on a wild pitch from EKU starter Lauren Narvaez in the seventh, a tough ending for a pitcher that limited JSU to five hits through her first six innings.

Bobbitt reached on a one-out single, her second hit of the game and moved to third on Sidney Wagnon's ground-rule double to right center. The drive from Wagnon would've been the game winner had it not bounced over the wall and forced Bobbitt to stop at second.

After Karsen Mosley grounded out to bring Megan Fortner up with two outs, Narvaez bounced one that catcher Morales couldn't corral and Bobbitt raced home to score easily and give JSU the win and keep them in a tie with Central Arkansas for first place in the ASUN's West Division.

Mosley joined Bobbitt with two hits in the game to lead the Gamecocks at the plate, while Wagnon had the Gamecocks' lone extra-base hit of the game.

The Gamecocks will take to the road on Friday to begin a three-game series at Lipscomb in Nashville. The set will begin with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Friday before wrapping up with a 1 p.m. single game on Saturday.
