JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville State University softball team's season came to an end Thursday evening with a 14-4 loss to Kennesaw State in the elimination bracket of the ASUN Conference Championships.
The long ball was prominent in the contest as both teams combined for eight home runs – an ASUN tournament single-game record. KSU tallied a program-record five homers while the Gamecocks collected three.
A pair of solo homers opened the scoring in favor of the Owls just two-thirds of the way in, to lead JSU 2-0. After a scoreless third, KSU hit its third homer of the game, leading the Gamecocks 4-0.
The JSU pitching staff gave up its fourth homer of the game in the fifth inning as KSU's Taylor Cates hit her second knock of the night. An eight-run sixth, that included a three-run homer, put KSU ahead 14-0.
With just three outs remaining in the season, senior
Camryn McLemore led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot, her seventh of the year, that was followed up by a long-ball from senior
Addie Robinson - her eighth of the season in her final at-bat. Following a
Brantly Bonds walk,
Lizzy VanManen drilled a two-run homer, her second of the season, in a pinch-run at-bat. KSU's starting pitcher, Melanie Bennett, reentered after VanManen's long ball and closed the door on JSU's comeback, 14-4.
JSU collected eight hits overall, five which came in the team's last at-bat and featured a lead-off base runner in every inning. In total, JSU left eight on base and pushed three runners to scoring position. Senior
Sidney Wagnon advanced to scoring position twice and finished 1-for-2 with a walk and reached on an error. McLemore and Robinson each finished the day 1-for-2 and 1-for-3, respectively, with one home run a piece. VanManen added JSU's third homer and finished 1-for-1 from the plate.
The Gamecocks finish the year 31-24 overall, 13-11 in the ASUN, and earned a No. 5 seed in the conference tournament.
