Seniors shine to pull JSU past Lipscomb, 72-67

JACKSONVILLE – Seniors Demaree King and Skyelar Potter combined for 45 points as Jacksonville State shot 51 percent as a team to outlast Lipscomb, 72-67, at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

King led the way with 26 of his own with a season-best six three-pointers to lead Jax State (9-13, 2-7 ASUN) in snapping Lipscomb's (13-9, 5-4 ASUN) conference-best four-game winning streak. The win moves JSU to 5-0 all-time against the Nashville-based Bisons.

Potter carried the Gamecocks early with 17 first-half points while JSU built an 18-point lead in the opening period. The Bowling Green, Ky., native's only bucket of the second-half came in the final 30 seconds when his jumper turned a one-possession game into a five-point advantage that would stand to the end.

In addition to a hot 51-percent shooting night, compared to Lipscomb at 44 percent, the Gamecocks also outrebounded LU, 34-25. The Gamecocks turned 11 offensive boards into 15 second-chance points. Marcellus Brigham Jr. led JSU with eight rebounds, followed by Juwan Perdue with six.

From a 16-all tie at the midway point of the first half, a triple from Potter sparked a 16-0 stretch for JSU that led to a 45-27 halftime lead. The margin grew to as many as 21 in the second half, before Lipscomb slowly chipped away at the deficit to draw as close as three, 70-67, in the final minute of the game.

The Gamecocks host Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon in the first meeting between the former Ohio Valley Conference foes since they were in the league.
