LORMAN, Miss. – A near-perfect performance carried Jacksonville State's men's tennis team to a 7-0 victory in Friday's match at Alcorn State. The Gamecocks jumped on top early and never looked back, scoring their first shutout of the season.
 
"First off today was a good win from our guys," associate head coach Trey Morris said. "However, we have some things that we need to address and clean up moving forward. I'm excited for our guys to have the chance to make those adjustments tomorrow when we take on Jackson State."
 
Jax State (2-1) claimed the doubles point in just under 40 minutes after dominant outings from the tandems of Vanja Dobrnjac/Lucius Soller and Konstantin Benneman/Alin Fatu. Those wins, 6-0 and 6-4 respectively, helped their squad to a quick lead in Mississippi.
 
Soller garnered the first singles triumph of his collegiate career with a 6-0, 6-2, in the fifth singles flight before Fatu tallied a 6-0, 6-0, win on court two. Vicente Arbelaez clinched the match victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win, and Dorbnjac (6-0, 3-6, 10-5), Logan Haga (6-0, 2-6, 6-0), and Xavier Sardi Marti (3-6, 7-6 [7-2], 10-3) followed suit.
 
Friday's win in the Magnolia State marked the first road victory of the season for Jax State's men, as well as their first triumph against Division I competition.
 
The Gamecocks will conclude their weekend road trip with a match at Jackson State on Saturday afternoon. Action in the capital city of Mississippi will begin around 2 p.m. Links to follow along with live stats will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
