JACKSONVILLE – The visiting Bellarmine Knights made 14 three-pointers and shots 53-percent to rally in the second half for a 75-62 win over Jacksonville State on Saturday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The win for the Knights (7-10, 2-2 ASUN) was the first ever over the Gamecocks (7-10, 0-4 ASUN), who continue the search for their first league win of the season.
JSU's primary scorers,
Demaree King and
Skyelar Potter, carried the load again with 16 and 14 points, respectively, but a five-minute scoring drought in the second half was too much to overcome.
Marcellus Brigham Jr. contributed a career-best nine points to go along with three boards following the first start of his career.
JSU shot neck-and-neck with BU through the first half with eight three-pointers of its own to build an eight-point lead at one point. The Gamecocks ultimately led by five, 37-32, at halftime, and maintained the advantage through the opening minutes of the second stanza. A free throw for Brigham made it a 47-40 lead with just under 16 minutes to play, but Jax State wouldn't score for the next 5:47 while BU went on a 12-0 run.
Another layup for Brigham cut the deficit down to two shortly after, but it would be as close as JSU could get in the closing minutes. BU's efficient offense continued to find the bottom of the net, eliminating JSU's chances at a late comeback.
The Gamecocks have a week at home as the prepare to face North Florida next Thursday, before hosting Jacksonville on Jan. 14.
