JACKSONVILLE – Fresh off a 91-41 win over Brescia in the season-opener, Jax State now welcomes its first Division I opponent into Pete Mathews Coliseum this season when Utah Tech arrives Saturday afternoon.
The Gamecocks and Trailblazers meet for the first time on Saturday in a contest set to tip at 2 p.m. from The Pete. Ironically, the women's teams for both schools met in St. George, Utah on Thursday evening.
Jax State controlled its season-opener leading wire-to-wire en route to the 50-point win over Brescia on Tuesday. The Trailblazers remain on the road after opening the season with a 77-69 setback at Santa Clara on Wednesday. UT won't play a home game in the month on November.
For fans that haven't heard of Utah Tech, they're not alone. The school rebranded in 2022 as it finishes a transition into the Division I level and the Western Athletic Conference. Formerly Dixie State, the Trailblazers won a pair of junior college national championships before moving to NCAA Div. II in 2006.
UT was led by junior David Elliott who scored 24 points in the team's first game. Jax State enters the matchup with a seemingly more balanced offense that saw eight Gamecocks score between nine and 12 points in the opener. Head coach Ray Harper is looking to lead Jax State to consecutive wins to open the season for the first time since 2017-18.
Saturday's game will broadcast on ESPN+ and carried over the air on the Gamecock Sports Network.
