Jacksonville State Set for Sunday Matinee in Starkville

STARKVILLE, Miss. – A second Southeastern Conference test awaits for Jacksonville State women's basketball on Sunday as the Gamecocks make the trip to the Magnolia State to take on Mississippi State. Tip-off at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Miss., is slated for 2 p.m.
Jax State (0-2) is in search of its first win of the new year after losses to a pair of tough teams on the road. The Red-and-White were outmatched in Monday's 78-49 setback at Auburn, falling to a veteran Tigers squad, then dropped Thursday's road match at Utah Tech to a resilient Trailblazers bunch. Now, Rick Pietri's team looks to avoid its first 0-3 start in ten years as they travel to Starkville, Miss., on Sunday afternoon.
The Gamecocks have seen a pair of newcomers step up in their first two contests of the 2023-24 campaign. Former Hazel Green star Samiya Steele tallied a team-high 11 points in her Jacksonville State debut on Monday on the Plains. On Thursday, Arizona Western transfer Kristol Ayson posted a 19-point, nine-rebound performance with five made threes in a loss at Utah Tech.
Mississippi State (2-0) is off to a strong start under second-year head coach Sam Purcell. They rolled to a 77-42 triumph over Alcorn State on Monday, then cruised by Southeastern Louisiana, 67-46, on Friday night. The Bulldogs, who are coming off a 22-win season that saw them make it to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, are a perfect 10-0 at Humphrey Coliseum against non-conference foes under Purcell's guidance.
Several Bulldogs have stood out to begin the season. Jessika Carter, JerKaila Jordan, and Erynn Barnum each recorded double-doubles in the season-opening win over Alcorn State, then Debreasha Powe had 19 points and nine boards in Friday's victory.
"They're the best team we've played to this point," Pietri said of MSU. "They're incredibly athletic and long. They have a number of accomplished players that have been on their roster and several who were extracted from the transfer portal who were major contributors elsewhere. Essentially, they're an all-star team. They present a litany of problems on the court for us."
Jacksonville State is 0-3 against Mississippi State since moving to Division I in the 1995-96 season. MSU won home matchups in Dec. 2001, Nov. 2011, and Dec. 2012. In the last meeting, Jax State lost 69-54 in Starkville. Pietri has defeated the Bulldogs, however, as his 2003-04 South Alabama team knocked them off 67-53 in Mobile.

"I'd like to see us compete for the full 40 minutes and not just in segments," Pietri said. "I think we've been very competitive in segments of these previous two games, but we haven't been competitive throughout. That's the thing I most want to see from us."
