Jax State Ends Texas Trip with Last-Second Win over UIW

SAN ANTONIO – If the goal was to flip the script for Jax State against UIW on Sunday afternoon, the Gamecocks did just that with a 67-65 victory off Marcellus Brigham Jr.'s last-second free throws.

Just four nights after a 67-66 last-second setback in UIW's gym, Jax State (3-4) turned the tables defeating the Cardinals (3-4) by a similar 67-65 outcome on Sunday.

KyKy Tandy carried the Gamecock offense with 20 points, including a strong finish in the closing minutes.

With a 21-20 lead midway through the first, Tandy drained back-to-back three-pointers to gain the first separation of the game. He added another shortly after to push the lead to double figures on his way to a game-high 13 points in the opening half.

UIW slowly trimmed the deficit in the second half, eventually tying the game at 54 during a 9-0 scoring run that forced a Gamecock timeout. The Cardinals continued on to lead by four, but baskets from Ivan Reynolds and Matt Mayers on a scramble play under the goal tied things up again with 3:35 remaining.

Scoreless in the second half after a big first-half, Tandy took over with the Gamecocks trailing by two late. An old-fashion three-point play to push Jax State in front 62-60 were the start of seven-straight points for the Hopkinsville, Ky., native. With Tandy answered each of UIW's late buckets, Jax State had one final possession with four seconds remaining, which went to Brigham Jr., who was fouled on driving layup attempt.

With the win, Jax State finished 2-1 during its Thanksgiving week in San Antonio and a perfect 2-0 at UTSA's Convocation Center. Head man Ray Harper is now 3-0 all-time inside UTSA's building.

After five games away from Pete Mathews Coliseum, Jax State returns home on Thursday evening to host in-state foe South Alabama.
