RUSTON, La. – Gamecock volleyball committed 27 attack errors and 10 service errors in Friday's Conference USA setback at Louisiana Tech. That loss sets up a crucial showdown on Saturday in Ruston, La.
The opening set saw Jacksonville State's offense start slow at Thomas Assembly Center. A lively crowd in the Bayou State cheered on the Bulldogs, who were celebrating Senior Night, to a dominant first set victory. Jax State totaled seven attack errors in the first interval leading to a 25-15 difference. The Gamecocks opened the second set sharp, using efficient attacks to build a slim advantage before Louisiana Tech battled back. In the end, the home squad picked up back-to-back points on a Sydney Jackwin kill and an attack error to take the second. Following another good start in the third, a mid-frame lull allowed the Bulldogs to claw back, take the lead, and secure the match with a 25-19 win.
Maddie Stayer had a match-best 12 kills on a .526 clip and added 21 assists and eight digs.
Kaylee Moseley finished with nine kills and four digs while
Selin Sakiroglu scored six kills and two blocks in the loss.
Brooklyn Schiffli (13) and
Luci Wilkinson (11) each had double-digit digs as well.
Jacksonville State was out-hit .206 to .090 but held advantages in kills (38 to 32) and assists (28 to 27). The Bulldogs narrowly had more aces (4 to 3), blocks (6 to 4), and digs (52 to 50).
Jax State will try to exact revenge on Louisiana Tech in Friday's regular season finale. First serve of that important CUSA contest is set for 3 p.m. The winner of the match will secure the seven-seed in next week's Conference USA Tournament and will made second-place Middle Tennessee in Friday's Quarterfinals, while the loser takes the eight-seed and meets first-place Western Kentucky instead.
