MADISON, Wis. – Jacksonville State hung with nationally-ranked Wisconsin deep into the second half in one of the toughest road environments in the nation, before falling 75-60 to the host Badgers Thursday night.
The Kohl Center crowd of 12,816 goes down as the 11th-largest to watch the Gamecock on the hardwood. The Big Ten Conference power once again proved its home court prowess winning its 41st consecutive non-conference home game against mid-major.
Jax State (4-7) was led early by
Marcellus Brigham Jr.'s 10 first-half points. The junior from Memphis, Tenn., finished as one of two Gamecocks in double figures led by graduate
KyKy Tandy with 16.
Mason Nicholson pulled down five rebounds, while
Quincy Clark dished a trio of assists on the night.
A three-pointer from Brigham late the in the opening half pulled Jax State back within three of the No. 23 Badgers (8-3) at 30-27, but UW would use an 8-0 run to separate back to a double-digit advantage. In the final seconds,
Ivan Reynolds took the inbounds and tossed up a half-court heave the found the bottom of the net to snap Wisconsin's run and make it a 38-30 score at the break.
Opening buckets by Clark and Tandy to begin the second half improved Jax State's run to seven-straight to draw within four points, but it would be as close as the Gamecocks could get on the road. Wisconsin slowly extended the margin back to double figures where it remained most of the rest of the game in the 12-15 range.
An undersized Gamecock squad against the towering B1G Badgers were out-rebounded 33-27, and outscored 40-20 in the paint.
Jax State heads home for a quick refresh before hitting the road again for Tarleton State and Little Rock next week.
