Gamecocks Wrap Up Non-Conference Play Against SCSU
12/28/2023 7:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball
JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State women's basketball will round out its non-conference slate at home on Friday night. The Gamecocks will play host to South Carolina State at Pete Mathews Coliseum with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m.
Jax State (4-7) is coming off a tough loss last time out. They were unable to climb out of an early hole against visiting UT Arlington, dropping a 69-64 heartbreaker to a tall Lady Mavericks squad. Kristol Ayson had a team-best 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and Jaz Spencer added 11 points in the loss.
Ayson, a junior guard from Tacoma, Wash., continues to pace the team's scoring efforts with an average of 9.4 points per game. Bre'Anna Rhodes is just behind her, scoring 8.2 per contest, and leads the squad with 58 total rebounds. Senior forward Keiara Griffin, who has 55 rebounds on the year, is tied for third with 6.7 points per game. The Red-and-White will look for big performances from those key players as they look to bounce back against South Carolina State (1-13).
The Lady Bulldogs, who are led by second-year head coach Tim Eatman, have faced a rigorous schedule to begin the 2023-24 campaign. Their only win came at home on Nov. 29 in a 76-58 triumph over Queens. SCSU has lost to all three of the common opponents between themselves and Jax State, falling to Coastal Carolina (73-61), UAB (69-54), and College of Charleston (84-64). Eatman's squad has dropped their last six showdowns, including a 67-43 setback at Furman on Dec. 21 in their last contest.
A pair of speedy guards have stood out for South Carolina State so far this season. Graduate Morgan Beacham and Tupelo, Miss., native Janiah Hinton are each averaging a team-high 8.0 points per game. A lack of height has been an issue for the Lady Bulldogs this Winter, as they are out-rebounded 38.4 to 31.8 on average. In addition, they rank just 341st out of 348 Division I teams with a turnover margin of -6.64.
Jacksonville State leads the all-time series against South Carolina State, 3-1. The Gamecocks won at The Pete in Dec. 2013, 73-63, and most recently drubbed the Lady Bulldogs in the 2021 Georgia Southern Classic, 75-43. SCSU's only win over Jax State occurred in a 55-52 classic in Orangeburg, S.C, in Dec. 2014.
Friday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Ray Hammett and Mickey Shadrix on the call, and Logan Maddox will handle the Gamecock Sports Network broadcast.
