KENNESAW, Ga. – Jacksonville State had a chance to tie in the closing seconds after a Kennesaw State missed free throw, but an errant three-pointer was no good just before the buzzer as the Gamecocks fell 74-71 on the road.
The hits just keep coming for a Jax State (10-17-, 3-11 ASUN) squad that's now lost three games in the last nine days by three points or less, and seven-straight losses by fewer than seven points. This weekend, JSU dropped consecutive games to first-place Kennesaw State (20-8, 12-2 ASUN) in contests that both came down to the last possession.
Seniors
Skyelar Potter and
Demaree King each scored 16 to lead the Gamecocks offense. Potter's final triple with 23 seconds left pulled JSU back within two late, setting up the chance to tie after KSU converted just one of two free throws on the ensuring possession.
Juwan Perdue joined the duo in double figures with 11 points while shooting 4-for-4 from the field. Clarence "Monzy" Jackson nearly reached the mark finishing with nine points to go with his team-high 10 rebounds.
JSU led for more than 27 minutes and for most of the first half. After taking a 36-30 lead into halftime, the Gamecocks built a game-high 11-point advantage at 48-37 with under 14 minutes to play.
From there, the host Owls chipped away at the deficit and slowly built momentum before overtaking JSU at 55-54. King knocked down his fourth and final three to break a 61-61 tie with just over five minutes remaining. Once KSU bounced back ahead it would be the last lead change of the night as the Owls made it 73-68 late before Potter's late triple that setup JSU's final chance at overtime.
JSU returns home next week for the final two home games of the season against Queens on Thursday, Feb. 16, and Liberty, Saturday, Feb. 18 for Senior Day.
