ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia rallied from an early deficit to even the season-opening weekend series against Jacksonville State on Saturday with a 10-3 decision at Foley Field.
The Gamecocks, who claimed Friday's Opening Day contest, 8-5, and Bulldogs will decide the series on Sunday in the rubber match. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CT on the UGA campus. The series finale will be available on the SEC Network + along with audio on the Gamecock Sports Network.
UGA broke a 3-3 deadlock in fifth with just one hit in the frame as Ben Anderson, who had a leadoff double, scored on a hit by pitch to give the home team its first lead of the weekend. UGA plated another run in the inning on fielders choice. UGA broke open the contest with a five-run eighth inning, aided by a two-run throwing error by the Gamecocks – the first miscue of the weekend.
In a mirror image of Friday's Jax State scoring, the three runs scored came off of one swing of the bat by senior
Carson Crowe in the third inning. Crowe delivered JSU's fourth home run in two games with a towering shot to right centerfield with a two-out, three-run home run.
After Crowe's dinger, the UGA pitching staff fended off scoring threats by the Gamecocks before the five-run eighth. Leighton Finley tossed three innings in relief and limited Jax State to one hit and posted a pair of strikeouts. He picked up the win in his Bulldog debut.
Sophomore
Tanner Jones went the first four innings on the mound for the Gamecocks as he was effective in his first start of the season. He scattered five UGA hits with the big hit being a three-run home run by Parks Harber in the third inning to answer Jax State's long ball in the top half of the inning. Junior
Camden Lovrich out of the bullpen was saddled with the loss, while freshman
Josh Sibley and sophomore
Austin Cornelius kept the JSU deficit to the two runs prior to UGA breaking the game open late.
Senior
T.J. Reeves put together his second multiple hit game with a pair of singles. Junior
Javon Hernandez posted a double, while freshman and UGA transfer
Bear Madliak had a hit against his former club. Junior Derrick Jackson also had a hit in as many days.
