JSU drops home finale to first-place Liberty

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State fell to Liberty, 79-55, on Saturday night in final home game of the 2022-23 season for the Gamecocks.

In the second meeting of the season, JSU (11-18, 4-12 ASUN) could not hang with the Flames (22-7, 13-3 ASUN) led by Darius McGhee's 27 points. Liberty reclaimed a share of first-place in the conference with the win and a Kennesaw State loss to Queens.

On Senior Night, JSU's departing seniors Demaree King and Skyelar Potter led the way offensively with nine and eight points apiece, respectively, while Maros Zeliznak pitched in four points. The Flames held Jax State without a double-digit scorer, but five Gamecocks finished with eight-or-more. Clarence "Monzy" Jackson matched King's team-high with nine, while Marcellus Brigham Jr. and Travis Roberts each registered eight alongside Potter.

JSU trailed just 21-18 with under seven minutes to play until halftime, when Liberty began a 16-1 stretch over the next five minutes to breakaway for an eventual 45-25 halftime advantage. The league's preseason favorite continued to stay hot in the second half to finish the night shooting 49-percent from the field.

On a noteworthy mark, King knocked down three of JSU's seven three-pointers for the game moving him to 86 for the season, which surpasses his previous school record of 84 set last year. With 214 career triples for the Red and White, he is only the third Gamecock with more than 200 in program history.

JSU hits the road for Central Arkansas and North Alabama to complete the season next week.
