JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State women's basketball suffered a 76-46 loss in Saturday's Senior Day showdown with Florida Gulf Coast. The 24
th-ranked Eagles sank ten threes at Pete Mathews Coliseum, leading to a decisive loss in the final home game for five seniors.
The Eagle offense came ready to shoot on Saturday afternoon. FGCU sank three treys and hit eight field goals in the first ten minutes. Preseason ASUN Player of the Year Tishara Morehouse added to an already nice advantage with a half-court three as time expired to push the Eagle lead to 21-9. That difference grew in the second quarter. Jax State rallied to cut it to a two-possession deficit thanks to six points in the frame by
Kennedy Gavin, but Florida Gulf Coast ended the half hot. A 13-1 run by the Eagles created their largest lead of the game in 18 points with a 41-23 halftime advantage.
Florida Gulf Coast wasted little time pulling away in the third. Sha Carter came alive, adding nine points in the interval, and helped the Eagles to a 10-0 scoring run over the final four minutes. Her efforts help increase their lead to 31 going into the final stanza, and although Jax State would outscore the visitors from Fort Myers, Fla., in the final ten minutes, it would not nearly be enough in a 76-46 setback.
Freshman
Brooklyn McDaniel led Jacksonville State with 11 points and finished just one point from tying a career-high in that category.
Kyra Williams tallied ten points, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist, and
Kennedy Gavin notched eight points and seven boards on Senior Day.
The Gamecocks out-rebounded FGCU 37-36 but shot 29.7% from the field and connected on just three three-pointers in the loss.
Saturday's contest was the final game for Jax State's Gavin, Williams,
Imari Martin,
Shawnta Shaw, and
NeKiyah Thompson.
Jacksonville State rounds out the regular season with an ASUN Conference matchup at Stetson on Wednesday. That game in DeLand, Fla., will tip-off at noon CST. The Gamecocks have already clinched a spot in next week's ASUN Women's Basketball Championship, which starts next Saturday, March 4.
