JACKSONVILLE – Gamecock women's basketball will travel to Stetson on Wednesday afternoon to play their regular season finale in DeLand, Fla. With the ASUN Tournament nearing and seeding starting to fall into place, Jacksonville State could improve its rank with a win in the Sunshine State and some help across the league.
Â
Jax State (15-13, 8-9) split last weekend's showdowns at Pete Mathews Coliseum. They opened their final homestand with a 69-62 triumph over Stetson (12-18, 6-10) on Thursday evening. The Hatters mounted an impressive comeback in the final period, erasing a 13-point deficit in under four minutes, before the Gamecocks regained their composure late to secure the seven-point win. Kyra Williams had a career-high 25 points in her next-to-last game in Calhoun County.
Â
Saturday's Senior Day contest versus visiting FGCU did not go as positively as the 24th-ranked Eagles handed Rick Pietri's squad a 76-46 setback in their final home game. Now, a veteran Jacksonville State team will look to close out the regular season with a win before heading into this weekend's ASUN Conference Tournament.
Â
The Gamecocks are currently 8-9 in league play, just behind foes with 9-8 records in Kennesaw State and North Alabama, and sit eighth in the ASUN Standings. However, if Jax State beats Stetson, KSU falls to Queens on Wednesday night, and UNA drops their season-finale at Jacksonville, the Red-and-White would pole vault to sixth in the conference and avoid a play-in game to start the tourney. Anything else would have them pitted against the Owls or Lions in a 7/8 play-in game on Saturday.
Â
Stetson, on the other hand, is still looking to clinch a spot in this year's conference tournament. The Hatters are in a tie with Jacksonville for ninth place in the league but sit just one game above Bellarmine and North Florida in the standings. A victory would send then back to the ASUN Playoffs, where they fell to FGCU, 82-67, in the semifinals last March.
Â
Wednesday's game in Florida will tip-off at noon CST. It will be broadcast on ESPN+ and Logan Maddox will have the call on the Gamecock Sports Network.
