Jax State Cruises to ASUN Win over North Alabama

JACKSONVILLE – Gamecock women's tennis maintained their perfect record in league play with a dominant showing in Monday's ASUN Conference match against North Alabama. Jacksonville State downed the visiting Lions 6-1 in a contest that was decisive from the onset.

"Any conference win is a big deal," head coach Mike Mucci said after the victory. "We're just continuing to gain momentum as we go forward and get ready for a big road trip against Queens and Liberty. We feel that we're capable of competing with anybody in the conference right now, so we're just trying to carry that momentum into the rest of the season."

Two quick doubles wins handed the opening point to Jax State (13-3, 3-0). Irene Artigas and Polina Ramenskaja rolled to a 6-3 triumph on court three just before Anna Syrova and Zuzana Pavelekova tallied a 6-3 victory in the no. 2 doubles flight.

Singles action saw more trouble for an overmatched UNA (6-9, 1-2) squad. Pavelekova (6-0, 6-1) and Romane Mosse (6-0, 6-0) raced out to nearly perfect singles wins and Dariana Prato clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0, victory on court five. Serafima Shastova (7-5, 6-1) and Syrova (6-4, 7-5) added decisions late in the in-state showdown as well, leading the Gamecocks to a 6-1 result.

"I'm just really proud of the team for continuing to stay positive and show great energy througout the matches," Mucci added. "We're playing a complete match each time out, and that's good to see."

With Monday's decisions, Mosse and Pavelekova earned their team-leading 11th singles wins of 2023. In addition, Pavelekova, Prato, Shastova, and Syrova improved to 3-0 in ASUN action. Mosse, Pavelekova, and Syrova stayed undefeated in conference doubles matches with the latter scoring her team-best 15th doubles victory of the year.

Jax State resumes a challenging ASUN Conference slate with a pair of road matches this weekend. The Gamecocks will travel to Charlotte, N.C., on Friday for a league test at Queens before heading to perennial power Liberty on Sunday morning.
