BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jacksonville State wrapped up a five-game road trip with a 6-3 loss to UAB at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham.
The Gamecocks struggles in midweek action continued as they fell to 13-12 overall and will now turn their attention to a key ASUN weekend series against Kennesaw State on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. The series will start on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. first pitch on Saturday. The series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m.
On a brisk day in downtown Birmingham, UAB took advantage of free bases to ignite a three-run second inning after falling behind 1-0 after Jax State took an early lead on junior Derrick Jackson's RBI single in the top of the second. A leadoff walk for UAB set the table for the three runs as it put together three hits in the frame to take a lead that it would nurse the rest of the way.
JSU sliced the lead in half in the fifth with a two-out RBI single by
Javon Hernandez, plating freshman
Bear Madliak, who kept the inning alive with a double. The Gamecocks had four of their eight hits recorded as doubles.
After JSU got within a run, UAB took advantage of ineffectiveness on the mound after another leadoff walk crossed the plate without a Blazer hit in the inning.
Jax State had an opportunity for a big eighth inning after a leadoff infield single by senior
T.J. Reeves. Sophomore
Brennen Norton followed him with a double to put the tying run in scoring position. After a UAB pitching change, the next three Gamecocks were retired. UAB's John Luke Martin recorded his second save of the season with two clean innings.
Norton was the lone Gamecock to have multiple hits in the game. Junior
Mason Maners wasted no time in extending his on-base streak to 37 games with a two-out single in the first inning. Reeves, who singled in his last plate appearance kept his on-base in every game this season alive.
The weekend series with the Owls will be streamed ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
