Baseball Faces Alabama State, Auburn In Midweek Tests

JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville State continues its 12-game homestand with back-to-back midweek outings on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. The Gamecocks will host Alabama State on Tuesday night before facing its third Southeastern Conference member, Auburn on Wednesday evening.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on both nights. Tickets for the midweek action will be available at the stadium box office. Admission is free for all Jax State students and all fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.

Jax State (4-7) will look to carry the momentum from Sunday's win over Bradley to close out the weekend series on a high note, while the Hornets (6-7) dropped a series to Yale in Montgomery last weekend. The Tigers enter the week at 9-1-1 ahead of a Tuesday clash with UAB.

The Gamecocks and Hornets renew the longstanding series between the two in-state programs, which dates back to the 1974 season. Jax State owns a 35-7 lead in the series, but ASU has claimed 10-of-the-last-14 meetings. Due to weather and scheduling conflicts, JSU and ASU did not compete on the diamond. Jax State won the season set during the 2021 season with a 14-10 win in Montgomery and a 5-3 decision on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

For the third time in the last five seasons, the Gamecocks and Tigers will meet in a home-and-home set. Jax State and Auburn have faced off twice in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Wednesday's first match up between the two clubs will be the 34th with AU holding an 18-15 advantage in the series. Jax State and Auburn have split the last two season series in 2019 and 2022 with the visiting team taking each gam. The Gamecocks topped the Tigers, 11-6, at Plainsman Park in 2019 and handed AU its only midweek loss of the 2022 season with a 5-2 win. The Tigers have won the last three contests in Jacksonville.

Senior outfielder T.J. Reeves enters the week atop the ASUN Conference total hits leaderboard with 21 through 11 games and enters the midweek action ranked 12th in  NCAA Division I Baseball for hits. Reeves has a hit in 9-of-the-11 games this season, including multiple hits in eight games. He has turned in five games with two hits, a pair of three-hit games and established a career high in hits for a game with four vs. Bradley on March 5.

Junior Mason Maners has put together a string of 23 straight games of reaching base, which dates back to the last 12 games of the 2023 season. In the 11 games this season, he has reached base 28 total times. Over the last 23 games, Maners has hit in 19-of-the-23 games and has two or more hits in 11 of the 23 games dating back to the Eastern Kentucky series last season. Maners' streak ranks eighth in the country behind Brando Comia of Illinois' 50-game on-base streak spanning the last two seasons.

Junior Reid Fagerstrom added another save under his belt by closing out Jacksonville State's 11-5 win over Bradley. Fagerstrom enters the week with four saves on the season. He is save shy of the national leaders, Terry Busse of Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State's Noah McLean. The two have five saves through the first three weekends of the 2023 season.

Following the ASU and AU outings, the Gamecocks will host South Alabama in a three-game weekend series. Friday's series opener will get started at 6 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. Saturday showdown before the series wrap up on Sunday at 1 p.m.
