Gamecocks Claim ASUN Road Series With Rout of UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville State secured its second ASUN road series with a 16-1 rout of North Florida on Saturday in the rubber match of weekend at Harmon Stadium.

A 10-run fifth inning highlighted the run-rule win by the Gamecocks, who moved to 16-15 overall and 9-3 in the conference. The largest run producing inning of the season for Jax State was sparked by  two grand slams in the frame. After JSU already expanded a 4-0 lead by two with a Brennen Norton single and a double by Derrick Jackson, Jr., freshman Caleb Johnson cleared the base with his first home run of the season and put the Gamecocks up double digits at 10-0. Four Gamecocks later, senior T.J. Reeves belted his sixth home run of the season to the deepest part of Dusty Rhodes Field.

The 16 runs is a season-high for the Gamecocks and the fifth ASUN game with double digit runs on the scoreboard.

With a big cushion, Jax State's Eli Zielinski collected his league-best sixth win of the season after tossing five complete innings. Zielinski scattered seven Ospreys hits and tallied a pair of strikeouts. The lone UNF run came in the fifth after he sat down after JSU sent 13 batters to the plate in the top half. Junior Reid Fagerstrom and sophomore Austin Cornelius pitched the sixth and seventh respectively.

The early start did not affect the Gamecocks after falling 5-3 on Friday night to the Ospreys. Jackson put JSU on the board with an RBI double in the second. The Huntsville, Alabama first baseman finished 3-for-4 on the day with a pair of RBI. Junior Javon Hernandez put together strong credentials for his second ASUN Player of the Week honor with his second three-hit game of the weekend. He was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Hernandez had an RBI triple in the third and posted his second home run of the weekend in the sixth inning. He finished the weekend 8-for-13 with five of the eight hits for extra bases. Hernandez collected a pair of home runs, two doubles and a triple against UNF pitching. He reached base 10 times with a pair of walks added to his hit total and delivered eight RBI in the three0game series. He also added two stolen bases during the weekend. Through four weeks of ASUN action, Hernandez is hitting .600 against league pitching.

Junior Mason Maners also had two hits with a home run and an RBI single. Norton and freshman Will Fincher had multiple hits in the lopsided contest.

For the second consecutive week, the Gamecocks will be idle during the midweek and will return to Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium next weekend against Jacksonville. The series with the Dolphins will start on Friday at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free.
