JACKSONVILLE – For the second consecutive night senior
T.J. Reeves broke open a close contest with a second grand slam of the weekend to lead Jacksonville State to a series-clinching, 10-3, win over Central Arkansas on Senior Night on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
In Friday's contest, Reeves blasted his second grand slam of the season in the eighth inning to expand a three-run Jax State lead. On Saturday he collected his third grand slam of the season to break open a 4-1 game in the seventh inning. Entering Sunday's series finale, Reeves has accumulated 10 RBI on four hits with back-t0-back multi-hit games versus UCA.
Reeves' blast was the eighth home run of the weekend for Jax State against Bears' pitching after junior
Javon Hernandez put the first three runs on the scoreboard to highlight a four-run third inning. The leading hitter for average in the ASUN reached base four times with three walks by UCA after he hit his fifth home run of the season. He bumped his hit total to 80 to lead the league in that category. Junior
Derrick Jackson, Jr. drove in the fourth run of the frame with a double down the left field line.
The four-run cushion was sufficient for sophomore
Tanner Jones, who bounced-back from a tough start at Liberty last Saturday to match a career-high in innings worked with seven complete frames and registering 10 strikeouts on a steamy night Saturday evening. Jones allowed three hits and a lone run for the Bears against him. For the second game in a row, sophomore
Austin Cornelius finished the game by covering the final two innings. He posted a pair of strikeouts in his second outing of the weekend.
Jax State honored its eight seniors prior to the contest and received contributions from Reeves,
Carson Crowe and
Jarrett Eaton. Crowe, playing in his 200th game in a Gamecock uniform had a single on Saturday, while Eaton drilled a double to the gap in left field in the eighth inning and scored on
Bear Madliak's single. Jackson walked with the bases loaded for his second RBI of the night.
The Gamecocks, who secured their fifth ASUN series of the season, will look to close out the 2023 home schedule on a high note in Sunday's finale. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
