LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty evened the ASUN weekend series with Jacksonville State with a 13-3 win on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
With the Flames' win in seven innings, coupled with Jax State's 11-4 win on Friday night, it sets up a rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The finale will be carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
LU scored in all six plate appearances on Saturday and took advantage of a pair of early Gamecock errors and seven walks by the three JSU pitchers in the contest. The Flames started fast with a pair of runs in the first, added a solo run in the second and broke open the game with back-to-back three-spots in the third and fourth innings. LU did all of its damage on just eight hits in the winning result and its starter, Trey Cooper handcuffed Jax State for 5.1 innings en route to recording his second win of the season. His outing was aided by the Gamecocks hitting into three double plays that kept them from producing a big inning after a pair of big innings led to JSU's win on Friday.
Jax State's offense came off of one swing of the bat in the sixth inning. Senior
T.J. Reeves collected his 11th home run of the season and second of the series with a three-run round tripper after Cooper plunked freshman
Bear Madliak to start the inning and walked junior
Mason Maners.
Maners and sophomore
Brennen Norton combined for four of the six Jax State hits in the setback. Maners extended his hitting streak to nine games with a first inning single. He added a bunt single in the fourth. He reached base three time with his walk in the sixth. The Vestavia Hills, Alabama outfielder will enter Sunday's contest with eight hits in the precious four games this week and four RBI. In the four games this week, he has reached base 12 times.
Norton added his second two-hit contest of the weekend with a double and a single on Saturday.
Jax State's
Tanner Jones was saddled with the loss in three innings on Saturday, while junior
Reid Fagerstrom and senior
Garrett Wade combined to pitch the final three innings.
