CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – On the final day of the regular season, Jax State handled the task at hand in clinching the weekend series over Austin Peay and securing its postseason position.
The Gamecocks (30-20, 15-9 ASUN) locked up the No. 3 seed in next week's ASUN Conference championship with a resounding 9-0 win over Austin Peay (25-22, 11-12 ASUN) in the first of two contests on the day.
Sophomore
Sarah Currie took the ball for the Gamecocks in the circle and dominated in silencing the Govs lineup for her seventh win of the season. The Lawrenceville, Ga., product, tossed her third shutout of the season while limiting APSU to just five hits through her six innings of work before the run-rule took effect. On the heels of
Kat Carter holding APSU scoreless in the final four innings last night on her way to a win, JSU seems to have its rotating firing on all cylinders at the right time. Currie's outing Saturday was her longest outing without giving up a run since her seven-inning shutout at Bellarmine on March 26.
Offensively,
Emma Jones and
Lauren Hunt combined to hit 5-for-7 from the top two spots in the order, and when Hunt was pinch-hit for in the sixth,
Camryn McLemore continued the trend with a RBI single to right field. Overall, six different batters brought runners home in game one with Jones and
Brantly Bonds recording two RBI apiece.
The final nail in the coffin came in a four-run sixth for the Gamecocks that put the run-rule into play at the end of the frame once Currie retired the Govs once more.
Carter returned to the circle in game two after her impressive performance the previous night. She lasted two and a third innings before giving way to freshman
Jordan Eslinger in a 2-2 ballgame in the third.
The bats cooled some for the Gamecocks in the second meeting of the day with just two hits through the first five innings. Still tied up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, a home run off Eslinger opened the door for a seven-run inning.
Hannah Brown entered and record one out, but a costly fielding error behind her couldn't end the frame before starter Carter returned to the circle. JSU fell 9-3 in the finale, which helped the Govs lock in their tournament spot.
With the eighth and final seed still to be determined, the top seven of the bracket are set as of early Saturday evening. JSU's No. 3 seed advances the Gamecocks to the second day of play and instantly into the double-elimination portion of the bracket. As it stands, JSU will take on the winner of No. 6 Stetson and No. 7 APSU in its first game of the tournament on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET at Stetson's Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Fla.
