Jax State Repels Hornets Ahead Of CUSA Action

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jacksonville State wrapped up the non-conference schedule with a 1-0 win over in-state rival Alabama State on Thursday evening on the ASU Soccer Field.

The Gamecocks continued their dominance over the Lady Hornets with their 11th straight win over ASU. Jax State improved to 5-4 overall and will head into Conference USA action on Sunday with momentum from the shutout win. In all five wins by Jax State have been shutouts. ASU dropped to 1-6-1 on the season as it heads into conference play.

It was a defensive stalemate for the Gamecocks throughout the night and another solid defensive effort noted by head coach Sean Fraser. Jax State also had ample chances of putting the contest away early on in the match. The Gamecocks finished with 21 shots on the night with a balanced attack as they posted 11 in the first half and added 10 in the final 45 minutes.

Jax State recorded the game winner in the 38th minute as it capitalized on one of the eight corner kicks on the night. A pair of sophomore newcomers combined to give the Gamecocks the eventual game winner. Naroa Domenech tallied her sixth goal of the season after heading the ball past the ASU keeper in the right back corner of the goal. Domenech moved into a tie for the team lead in goals for Jax State with junior Laleh Lonteen. Salome Kerguillec put a perfect ball in front of the goal for Domenech to finish the play. Domenech and senior Vanessa Mejia led the Gamecocks with six shots, while Lonteen added five shots.

"Whether it is a win or a loss, we try to take the positive view points, so the positive tonight is that with us being wasteful in front of the goal, it keeps us on our toes for Sunday. In a way, it would have been nice to win by more tonight, it keeps us humble a bit and hopefully hungry for Sunday," said Sean Fraser. "I thought we were really good defensively for the third or fourth game in a row."

The attention now turns to Sunday's CUSA opener against Sam Houston, who is also making its league debut on Sunday. The Bearkats, who have been idle for a week, enters the CUSA opener at 2-3-2 overall.

"It has been a good journey so far and we feel like we have had a couple of bad results and we have learned from those. We are a one game at a time team. All eyes are now on Sunday and it is a massive game not for just the program but for the whole university," added Fraser.

The CUSA lid lifter will get started at 1 p.m. at the Jax State Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all home matches. The match will also be streamed on ESPN+.
