Gamecocks Remain Unblemished On Home Turf; Blanks MVSU

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team remained unblemished on the home turf with a 3-0 win over Mississippi Valley State on Thursday afternoon at the Jax State Soccer Complex.

The Gamecocks (4-3) improved to 4-0 on their home pitch and has outscored the opposition, 25-0 in the first four matches at home this season. The Devilettes of MVSU dropped to 0-4 on the season.

After junior Laleh Lonteen collected her sixth goal of the season in the first half, the Gamecocks expanded their lead with a pair of goals in the final 45 minutes. Lonteen, who ranks among the NCAA Division I leaders in total goals this season, got past the MVSU keeper in the 20th minute of the contest. The Prosper, Texas native tallied four points on the day with an assist on Jax State's third goal of the match. Lonteen joined junior Ella Owen on the play to help sophomore Baylee Eads record her first goal of her career with a header in front of the goal in the 55th minute. Freshman Anna Holl posted her first career goal eight minutes into the second half. Freshman Salome Kerguillec aided in the goal.

As a team, the Gamecocks controlled the match offensively with an 18-3 advantage and had nine corner kick opportunities. In a physical match, a total of six yellow cards were issued with five of the six going against MVSU.

"We controlled the match and would have liked to have seen more goals. It was nice to use a lot of players again and it was good to get the shutout. We are growing up and it was a good opportunity to grow as a team and I think there will be things we are happy with and things that we will be disappointed with," said head coach Sean Fraser.

Fraser was able to play 18 of the 22 players available for the match. Senior Amanda Chimbima made her first start on the Gamecocks' defense while freshman Sydney Beal saw action for the second time as a Gamecock. Senior Vanessa Mejia led Jax State with six shots, while Naroa Domenech add four shots.

Sophomore Bailey Dean registered another shutout and was tested just three total shots for MVSU and corralled a pair of saves.

The Gamecocks will conclude the home non-conference slate with a key in-state battle with North Alabama on Sunday afternoon. Even though Jax State and North Alabama have been longtime rivals in athletic competition dating back to the two schools' days in NCAA Division II, the two schools have only met four times on the pitch. Sunday's outing will be the fifth meeting and the third on the Jax State campus. The first two meetings between the Gamecocks and Lions were non-conference match ups in 2018 and 2019. The two sides became conference foes in 2021 and 2022. Jax State's win over UNA came during the 2021 campaign.

"It will be a challenge with a big opponent and obviously there is history between the two schools. It will be another opportunity to learn and grow before the conference season starts," added Fraser.

Kick off between the Gamecocks and Lions is set for 1 p.m. Admission is free to all home matches. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
