GREENVILLE, N.C.—The Jax State women's golf team finished in a tie for sixth at the Pirate Invitational at Greenville Country Club in a weather-shortened 36-hole event.
During the second round on Monday, play was halted near the midway point of the round due to thunderstorms in the area and then darkness. The teams finished the final round on Tuesday with High Point claiming a two-shot victory over host East Carolina with a team total of 574.
The Gamecocks shot 293 in the first round and 302 in the second round.
"It's a positive sign that we have improved our opening round scoring and the way we are starting our rounds, which was a point of emphasis early in the season," said coach
Robbie Fields. "Now we have to get back to closing out those rounds strong. We are putting ourselves in contention and getting to learn how to handle that, and I believe we will get better and take advantage of those opportunities in the future."
On the individual leaderboard,
Rachel Camp and
Emilie Clausen tied for 13
th with a three-over 36-hole total of 147. Clausen was one under on Monday and posted 76 in the second round. Camp shot an even-par 72 in the first round followed by a 75 in the second.
Ebby Somers placed 23
rd in the field with a five-over tournament total of 149 with rounds of 75 and 74.
Lara El Chaib was 40
th with rounds of 75 and 77.
Sandra Menes shot 79 on Monday but withdrew from the second round due to illness.
"I'm proud of how this team handled the adversity of the week to still see some positive signs," said Fields. "We will get back to work and be better for the next opportunity."
Following a week off, the Gamecocks will next participate in The Southern hosted at Savannah Country Club by Georgia Southern on October 14
th and 15
th.
