JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State rifle team will begin their quest for an NCAA Rifle Championship appearance on Saturday as the 2024-25 season gets started at the Gamecock Rifle Range inside Rowe Hall on the Jax State campus.
The Gamecocks will host former Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State in a dual match. Saturday's season debut is the first of 13 outings over the next few months for veteran head coach Ron Frost, who became the dean of Jax State coaches with the retirement of Jana McGinnis, who led the softball program for decades.
Frost has put together another solid lineup for the 2024-25 season. Frost has put together a challenging schedule together for his squad with matches against former Ohio Valley Conference foes and perennial powers in NCAA Rifle. Saturday's contest with the Eagles is one of two during the fall semester.
Jax State opens the season ranked among the NCAA elite in rifle in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association's preseason poll. The Gamecocks are ranked 15th in the initial poll, while MSU is right behind them at No. 16.
The 2024-25 schedule features trips to Oxford, Mississippi, Murray, Kentucky, Charleston, South Carolina and El Paso, Texas in the 2024 portion of the schedule. The Gamecocks will conclude the fall slate with matches against Memphis and UT Martin and the annual Gamecock Invitational.
Frost returns the majority of the squad from last season and has added additional pieces to bolster the lineup. Joining the Gamecocks for the 2024-25 are freshmen Jenny Ek from Fredrickstad, Norway, Grayson Ellis from Anniston, Alabama, Emmajames Stanton from Lakeland, Florida and Alex Watts from Folsom California.
Following Saturday's match, the Gamecocks will travel to Oxford, Mississippi to face the Rebels on Oct. 26.
