HUNTSVILLE, TX. – Jacksonville State fell in a tough five set match on the road at Sam Houston Friday afternoon.
The Gamecocks (7-18, 0-12) lost the first set to the Bearkats (13-10, 8-4) 25-19. Jax State tied the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 win. Sam Houston beat Jax State 25-21 before Jax State tied it back up with a 25-19 victory in the fourth. The Bearkats clinched the match with a 15-8 win in the fifth set. Jax State, as a team, had 56 kills, six aces, 12 blocks, 54 assists, and 93 digs in the match.
Brooklyn Schiffli set a new digs career-high with 30 in the loss. Schiffli is the first Gamecock to have 30 digs in a match since Hannah Kirk had 35 at Eastern Illinois back in 2017. Three other Gamecocks had double-digit digs including
Luci Wilkinson with 18,
Ellie Garrett with 13, and
Kayla Williams with 13.
Williams led the way in kills with 22, after a 30-kill outing Thursday night.
Hana Aiana had 12 kills and
Caty Havekost added 11 kills, respectively. Garrett had another solid game with 45 assists and led the squad in service aces with three.
The 30 kills from Williams were the first time a Jax State player has had 30 kills in a match since Emily Rutherford had 31 against Southeastern Missouri on Nov. 15, 2015. Schiffli and Williams both had over 30 kills and 30 digs on back-to-back nights when those two single-game achievements had not been achieved in nearly a decade.
The Gamecocks return to the Pete Mathews Coliseum Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2, to face the Florida International Panthers. The matches will be streaming on ESPN+, live stats will be available at JaxStateSports.com, and admission to all home volleyball games is free.
