JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's volleyball team is back in action at Pete Mathews Coliseum this Friday and Saturday for a showdown with Florida International.
The Gamecocks (7-18, 0-12) are currently in ninth place while the Panthers (5-20, 3-9) are sitting in eighth place as the volleyball regular season nears its end. The Conference USA takes the top eight teams to the conference tournament in volleyball.
Jax State is coming off a pair of losses at Sam Houston State last weekend. Although the Gamecocks took two losses against the Bearkats, Ellie Garrett, Kayla Williams, and Brooklyn Schiffli set career highs. In the match on Oct. 24, Garrett had 56 assists and Williams had 30 kills. Williams' 30 kills were the first time a Jax State player has had 30 kills in a match since Nov. 15, 2015.
Schiffli had 30 digs in the match on Oct. 25 against Sam Houston. Her 30 digs were the first time a Gamecock has tallied 30 or more digs since Hannah Kirk had 35 back in 2017. The duo of Schiffli and Williams having 30 kills and 30 digs in a single match was the first time both achievements have been accomplished in almost a decade.
Williams is second in the conference in average kills per set at 3.92, Garrett is third in the CUSA in average assists per set at 9.11, and Schiffli is third in the conference in average digs per set at 4.23.
Florida International grabbed their first conference win against Kennesaw State on Oct. 25. After losing to the Owls on Oct. 26, the Panthers clinched back-to-back wins over Liberty on Tuesday and Wednesday.
FIU's Mandi Morioka is in fourth place in the conference averaging 4.21 digs per set and Savannah Cook is fifth in the league averaging 8.33 assists per set.
The matches will be streaming on ESPN+, live stats will be available at JaxStateSports.com, and all home matches include free admission for fans. The game Friday will start at 6 p.m. and Saturday's will start at 1 p.m.
