JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's volleyball squad returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum for a couple of showdowns against rival Kennesaw State on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Gamecocks (7-10, 0-4) are coming off a tough weekend at Liberty in which they suffered two losses. The matches against the Flames did not go the way of the Gamecocks, but they did show bright spots for individual players.
In Friday's match against Liberty, Caty Havekost led the Gamecocks with 14 kills and had a career-high .355 hit percentage. In Saturday's competition, Brooklyn Schiffli hit a career milestone of 1,000 digs. The senior libero was 20 away entering the weekend and now sits 14th on the all-time digs list at Jax State with 1,011 digs.
Kayla Williams broke a Liberty Arena single-game record with her 29 kills on Saturday. The 29 kills were also a career-best for her. Williams set a career-high in service aces with five in the match Saturday as well.
Kennesaw is fresh off being swept twice by CUSA power Western Kentucky last Friday and Saturday. The Owls picked up their first ever CUSA win in volleyball on Sep. 27 with a 3-2 victory over New Mexico State. Kennesaw was projected to finish seventh in the preseason poll. Their junior outside hitter Manu Johnsen was also picked for the preseason all-conference team.
The matches will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats available at JaxStateSports.com. Admission to all home volleyball matches is free. Tuesday, Oct. 8, the volleyball team will be taking donations of specific items for the victims of Hurrican Helene. A list of the items can be found on any social media account under the handle @JaxStateVB. Fans are encouraged to give what they can to help those in need.
