Jax State Heads to South Carolina State for a Friday Night Contest

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Jacksonville State's women's basketball team heads to the Palmetto State for a matchup with South Carolina State on Friday evening. The Gamecocks won their home opener 77-58 against Southern Utah on Saturday, Nov. 9. SC State lost at home to South Carolina-Upstate 52-60 on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

Series History
Jax State holds a 3-1 series record over the Bulldogs. The two squads faced each other last season at the Pete Mathews Coliseum when the Gamecocks claimed a 55-41 victory. In 2021, Jax State dominated the Bulldogs at Georgia Southern's Thanksgiving Tournament 75-43, and the Gamecocks won the initial matchup between the teams back in 2013 by score of 73-63 also at the Pete. The Bulldogs lone victory over Jax State came on Dec. 16, 2014, in a 55-52 win in Orangeburg, S.C.
A Balanced Attack
In the home opening win over Southern Utah on Nov. 9 four Gamecocks scored double-figures. Elsie Harris led the way with 13 points, Asia Barclay had 12, and Clara Gonzalez Planella and Mya Barnes both had 11, respectively.
Asia's Big Game
Barclay did much more against the Thunderbirds than just put the ball through the hoop. The senior forward from Anniston, Ala., led the Red-and-White in rebounds with seven. Barclay also had a block and a steal proving to be a force on the defensive side of the ball for Jax State to compliment her offensive output.
Perfection
Barnes' 11 points came on a perfect shooting night as she was 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from three-point range. She was not the only Jax State player to not miss a field goal, however. Brooklyn McDaniel scored four points on a perfect field goal percentage as well. McDaniel also stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds and a team-best four assists.
Pietri's Home Opener Streak
Since taking over the Jax State program, head coach Rick Pietri has yet to lose a home opener making him 12-0 after last weekend's victory over Southern Utah. His first home win came against Miles College in his inaugural season in 2013-14.

The Gamecocks will return home for a pair of games to close out the month of November, beginning with a matchup against in-state rival UAB on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. Jax State will then face Sewanee at the Pete on Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
