Gamecocks Host In-State Rival UAB Wednesday

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State is set for a Wednesday night showdown with in-state rival UAB. The Gamecocks and Blazers faced one another in an instant classic last season that went into overtime inside UAB's Bartow Arena in the two teams' first meeting since 2003.

Last Time Out
Jax State handled business in their second road game of the year on Nov. 15 in a commanding 72-41 over South Carolina State. Valentina Saric led the Gamecocks with 14 points on an efficient 5-11 shooting from the field and 4-8 from three. UAB dominated in a 92-66 home win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Series History
Last season's matchup between the Blazers and Jax State on Nov. 27, 2023, was the first time the two squads played in a decade. Although Elsie Harris had a career-best 23 points, the Blazers came out victorious 85-78 in overtime. The Blazers hold a 7-2 all-time record over Jax State with the Gamecocks last win over UAB coming at home on Dec. 13, 2003, in a 73-69 final. The first time the teams played was Dec. 2, 1986, when UAB won 88-43.
Barnes' Consistency
To this point, the most consistent performer for Jax State has been senior forward Mya Barnes. Barnes is averaging 11.3 points per game and has yet to not score double-digits in a game. Barnes is scoring her points efficiently on 50% shooting from the field and 52.9% from three. She is also averaging five rebounds, two blocks, 1.7 steals per game, and 27.3 minutes per game.
Nina Breaks Out
Jax State's win over South Carolina State was highlighted by Morehead State transfer forward Valentina Saric pouring in a team-best 14 points on a solid 5-11 makes from the field and 4-8 attempts from three-point range. The breakout game brings Saric's season average to 7.3 points per game which is tied for second on the team with Asia Barclay.
Big Time Post Players
Along with forwards Saric and Barnes, senior post players Bre'Anna Rhodes and Barclay have consistently put up points and brought down rebounds early this season. Barclay had a great outing against Southern Utah on Nov. 9 as she scored 12 points and grabbed seven boards. Rhodes had a nice night on Nov. 4 against Arizona State with 15 points and six rebounds. Rhodes averages the second most points at 9.3 per game and leads the team in rebounds averaging six a contest. Barclay is averaging 7.3 points and five rebounds.
Up Next
The Gamecocks will host Sewanee on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. before hitting the road again for a test against Missouri on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.
